Episode 3: Memoir as Survival Technology with Megan

Unsentimental Letters conversation with Edwin Canizalez and guest Megan

Before we begin: this episode contains honest discussion of trauma, suicide, and grief. If any of those topics require you to step back, please do. You can come back to the recording; or not. There is no version of this conversation that is worth your wellbeing.

Megan is a narrative memoirist of cinematic precision who is simultaneously a lyric poet. These two voices operate in completely different registers. The Jackie Saga and the poems like “Scorpion,” “Behind the Barn,” and “Transparent” could almost be by two different writers. Understanding why they belong to the same person is the key to the whole episode.

She renders scenes with unflinching physical specificity. These images are not gratuitous. Rather, they serve as evidence. She writes about desire, the body, and sexuality with complete honesty and zero performance. This is rare. Most writers either romanticize this dynamic or self-flagellate about it. Megan just describes it as it was (So Velvet Underground).
